Get Involved

Are you looking for a way to be an advocate, volunteer, or health educator?  Do you want to do something to fight chronic disease?  Here are some small things you can do to make a big difference!

Feeding America

Good health comes from good nutrition.  Millions of Americans are struggling to put food on their table and without a balanced diet, people of all ages are more susceptible to disease.  If all a family can afford is high calorie, low nutrient food (like chips, frozen dinners, fast food), they are more likely to develop high blood pressure and heart disease, or become obese and get Type II diabetes, among other things.  With just a few dollars, or a few hours of your time, you can help give these families the food they need to be as healthy as possible.

Operation Frontline

This organization teaches families how to prepare nutritious meals on a very tight budget.  Chefs, nutritionists, and others can volunteer their time to help teach families how to make the most of what they can afford.  Those who don’t have enough time to be a teaching volunteer can attend a “Taste of the Nation” benefit dinner, at which some of their ticket price will be donated to Operation Frontline.  Information is also given on how to host, cook for, or sell at a neighborhood “Great American Bakesale”of which all proceeds go to support this organization.

Stop Diabetes

According to this website, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, 1 in 3 children will develop diabetes if obesity trends continue in America.  It will affect your family, your friends, and your neighbors.  It’s time to take action to find a cure!  Stop Diabetes allows you to learn about diabetes, donate to diabetes research, and know when diabetes fundraisers are going on in your area and how you can help.

Run for Diabetes

This organization gives you all the resources you need to create a donation website and ask sponsors, friends, and community members to help support the cause as you run a marathon.  You can run any marathon in the country, and all the money that you raise goes to the Diabetes Research Institute to help find a cure for diabetes.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure

The Susan G. Komen Foundation has helped raised millions of dollars for breast cancer research and awareness.  It has allowed women to become advocates for change and has made Americans aware of the real danger of cancer.  You can find out more information about Race for the Cure, Passionately Pink for the Cure, and other breast cancer fundraising events in your area on this website.

Relay for Life

This 24-hour long relay race, organized by the American Cancer Society, has been an important cancer fundraiser since 1985.  It honors the victims and survivors of cancer, and allows the participants to more fully commit themselves to fighting cancer.  The relays are organized all over the United States.  With the information on this page, you can start, participate in, or make a donation to help fight cancer.
